8 Must Do Pittsburgh Acitivites for Spring 2019
It is officially safe to say that spring is here! No, you do not have to pinch yourself; this is real life. Spring is officially here. That means no more snow or cold mornings. Well, at least we hope so!
If you are like us, we have been waiting for spring the moment that summer 2018 ended. Pittsburgh is our home. And while that is true, we must admit; we like living here a whole lot more during the spring and summer months.
We encourage you to explore your city more this spring. If you have lived here for more than a few years, it can be quite easy to get complacent in your hometown and want to travel to see other cities. As much as we enjoy that ourselves, Pittsburgh has many attractions that are breathtaking during the spring but can often be overlooked.
What should you do this spring? We compiled our top 8 favorite spring activities to do in the Pittsburgh region for this article!
#1 Visit Mount Washington on a Clear, Sunny Day
Often times with your home city, it can be easy to overlook the touristy aspects. For those that live in the Pittsburgh region, Mount Washington usually falls into this category. Mount Washington is typically a place that most of us take our friends or family from out of town. Especially if they have never been there before. Sometimes, we need a little reminder of how truly beautiful our city is. Taking a few minutes to hangout on one of the Mount Washington overlooks can remind us of this very fact!
#2 Ride the Monongahela or Duquesne Incline
When you travel down to Mount Washington on a beautiful Pittsburgh day, why not also hop in for a ride on one of the inclines? When thinking of the incline, the Monongahela is typically the one that comes to mind. The Monongahela incline runs to the top of Mount Washington. However, the view from the Duquesne Incline provides a totally different vantage point of the city.
#3 Picnic or Walk At Schenley Park
Originally founded in 1889, Schenley Park now encompasses 456 acres of trails, woods, and scenery. The park hosts many large events such as the Vintage Grand Prix and the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. While both of these events present great opportunities to visit Schenley Park, we recommend visiting even when no event is being held. Simply picnic or walk through the park to appreciate some peace and quiet set apart from the chaos of downtown.
#4 Attend a Pittsburgh Pirates Game
Whether you enjoy baseball or not, attending a Pirates game is a must this spring. Baseball America ranked PNC Park #2 on its list of the Top 10 Nicest MLB Stadiums. If you have ever attended a game at PNC Park, you will understand why. PNC Park presents breathtaking views of the city that just cannot be seen from any other spot downtown.
#5 Hike at Ohiopyle State Park
The Pittsburgh region has many gorgeous state parks to choose from. Our personal favorite is Ohiopyle. Ohiopyle State Park presents many different possibilities for activities to do with family or friends. From simply hiking the beautiful trails to rock climbing or whitewater rafting, Ohiopyle has activities that anyone in any age group can enjoy.
#6 Attend Phipps for the Spring Flower Show
Phipps Conservatory is known for their spectacular winter displays around the holidays. The Spring Flower Show, known as Gardens of the Rainbow, is slightly less known. The spring show presents tens of thousands of spring blooms that cover the vast array of colors that we associate with the spring season. This spring display is a must see for anyone.
#7 Ride Bikes on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail
The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a riverfront trail system that runs 24 miles along the Pittsburgh region. The trail has segments that touch both banks of city's three rivers. The trail also provides access to city neighborhoods, business districts, and other local attractions. Hop on a bike and ride throughout Pittsburgh to help yourself feel less guilty about whatever meal and/or desserts you will eat downtown!
#8 Eat at One of Our Favorite Pittsburgh Restaurants
